SLIGO FOOD TRAIL BROCHURE HIGHLIGHTS NEW FOOD EXPERIENCES

This post, written by Val Robus, was first published here: https://magnumlady.com/2017/07/27/sligo-food-trail…

I’m a big fan of the food we have here in Sligo and it just keeps getting better and better with all the new food experiences now available. The new Sligo Food Trail brochure is out now and there’s something for everyone with over 30 experiences in this information packed brochure.

The Sligo Food Trail Experiences brochure is available from all 70+ members and in Tourist Information Offices. It contains all the prices and details of the various experiences and some photos that are sure to whet your appetite.
I’ve tried some of the experiences listed and I can highly recommend them. I’ll tell you a bit more about those ones:
Foraging Walk with Neantóg. A wonderful walk with Gaby who is a great guide and her expertise and knowledge will advise you of all the edible plants that grow so freely around Sligo. She also has some fantastic recipes that she will share.

Afternoon Tea at Eala Bhan. This really is such a treat, you’ll be spoilt for choice as you decided what to eat first. A wonderful, relaxing afternoon spent in this beautiful restaurant along the banks of the Garavogue River.

The Coney Island Experience is hosted by Dr. Prannie Rhatigan. You will learn all about the new superfood that is seaweed and how to harvest your own. After your Coney Island adventure you join Anthony Gray of award-winning Trá Bán Restaurant for a delicious lunch of local Lissadell mussels.

Mullaghmore Adventures with a seafood tasting experiences. Although I haven’t been out with North West adventures, I have been coasteering in Mullaghmore and it was just amazing, my favourite adventure so far. If coasteering sounds a bit too extreme there’s always cycling and Stand Up Paddling. All this is topped off with a visit to the award-winning seafood restaurant Eithna’s by the Sea – which I can highly recommend, it’s fab.

Appetite for Adventure on Lough Talt. John from Wild Wet Adventures has teamed up with Cawley’s Hotel to offer a day with a difference. Choose from this fantastic range of activities: Stand up Paddleboarding, Kayaking, Canoeing, Archery, or Hill Walking in the Ox Mountain. I’ve done the kayaking and stand up paddling with John and had a wonderful time. Next on my list is the hill walking with him. After you adventure you’ll head to Cawley’s Hotel for lunch and experience the warm welcome of the lovely people in Tubbercurry.

Take a tour of Lough Gill Brewery. Another experience I loved. These people are just so enthusiastic about their beer, you’ll be swept away by them…and the beer is fantastic too!
Ireland’s Earliest Takeaway Experience is run by archaeologist Auriel Robinson of Seatrails. You will enjoy a walk with a difference in Strandhill as you learn about the shell middens dating back to prehistoric times. Freshly harvested mussels are cooked on the rocks by one of Trá Bán Restaurant’s expert chefs.

Have a wine tasting night with Joe from The Wine Buff. Joe is one of my favourite people, he’s just such a lovely man, with a friendly face and his love and knowledge of wine is infectious….and yes that is Joanna Lumley with him. I can’t guarantee she’ll be there when you visit though.
If you fancy trying a new language or improving one Osta have Irish, Spanish and German evenings. It’s very informal and well worth going along for their great food too.
So those are just some of the experiences I’ve tried. There are also some I’d love to try including bread making at Pudding Row, Raw Works at Sweet Beat, Making a wooden bowl with Colm Brennan Woodturner, pizza making at Bistro Bianconi (although that’s only for kids….at the moment!) I also see there are Gin tastings in Sligo’s oldest pub Thomas Connolly (I know someone who’d love that!)
So hopefully that’ll give you some food for thought for your trip to Sligo. Be sure to check out all the wonderful markets too.
Information on Sligo Food Trail is readily available through the website (www.sligofoodtrail.ie), social media and the brochures available in the Fáilte Ireland Tourist Information Offices as well as from members. Check out their cheerful videos too and find out more about this fascinating food trail.
